Ready to fly again

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Yee Haw!! 22C is ready to take to the sky again. I can’t wait.

Today the winds were howling with gusts to 35kts. I went out early and spent the day finishing all of the details around the installation of the new ignitions. I got everything put back together and pulled it out onto the ramp to see how it would run. Vroooommm! Woohoo, very exciting. The new ignitions ran great during a runup. About 90 rpm drop on the slick mag, and about 10-20 rpm drop on the lightspeed. Slow idle is definitely smoother in this configuration than it was with the Pmags. Timing was spot on.
Tanya came out and helped clean up the interior and reinstall the seats and stuff that were removed. I put the plenum top back on, checked the tires, and cowled it back up. It is ready for a test flight tomorrow. It feels like it has been months since I’ve flown.

Ignition and FWF progress

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I spent the day cleaning up and finalizing all of my ignition and firewall forward wiring. I re-tied a lot of wires with lacing cord. I use very few zip ties firewall forward. I routed the mag and lightspeed coil spark plug wires, fun with adel clamps. I sealed up my new firewall penetrations with fire caulk. I found the correct (5/8-18) stop nut at the hardware store for the new tachometer sensor mount. I had to grind it down to less than half its width. It is going to work great.

All that is left is to double check everything, torque and safety wire the prop bolts, cleanup the cockpit and reinstall the seats. Then we’ll be ready to fire it up and check the timing. Maybe this weekend will find it back in the air!

Lightspeed installed

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

I think I have the Lightspeed Plasma II+ install complete. All wires have been dressed, the ignition coils are done, the crank sensor is installed and gapped, and the prop is back on it. I have also completed and installed a new tach sensor mounting bracket and the new tach sensor is all wired up. Tanya was kind enough to come out one day and turn a wrench for a while to remove the alternator on the vacuum pad, install the tach cable, and reinstall the alternator. The right mag hole has been blocked off. I think all of the cabin and under the instrument panel work is done.
Next up is to install the impulse-coupled mag and harness and dress up a few more wires firewall forward. I’m making progress.

Ignition work

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I have the the new lightspeed Plasma II+ controller installed on the back side of the firewall slightly above the rudder pedals on the pilot’s side. I made some “Z” brackets and Tanya helped me rivet them on to the firewall. That required some seriously expert riveting on both sides. I have the ignition coil wires and crank sensor trigger wires rough run. I needed to cut off the 15pin d-sub connector for routing through the firewall so I’m about ready to reinstall that.
I got the new tach sensor from Vans with a 12″ extension cable. I still need to make a mounting location for it. I found that there is not enough room to even think about installing the tach cable on the back of the accessory case without removing the SD-20 backup alternator on the vacuum pad. So it looks like I’ll be doing that as well. It looks like after the backup alternator is removed, I’ll be able to install the tach cable, then reinstall the alternator. I think it will all fit, the assembly sequence is just a bit of a pain.
