Priming

Sunday, October 31st, 2004

I believe I have just about completed my priming research. There sure is a lot said on the topic. Most people (not everyone) believe that all internal airframe components should be primed for long term corrosion resistance. This is what I believe our priming process will be:

  • Scuff all parts with ScotchBrite pads (07447).
  • Pre Clean parts with Dawn dish detergent
  • Clean with PPG DX-533 Aluminum Cleaner. This is diluted with 3 parts water and applied with a spray bottle and fine ScotchBrite pad, then rinsed with water and dried.
  • Dip part in PPG DX-503 Aluminum Conditioner (tinted alodine). 3 minutes in the dip, then straight to a tub of water. Then dried
  • Finally a two part epoxy primer will be applied PPG DP-50 (gray)
  • Squeezer arrives

I received the pneumatic rivet squeezer that I got on ebay ($180). It looks a little rough, but with a little TLC I think it will probably do the trick. I guess we’ll see once I get some rivets to squeeze.

    Why, What, and How

    Friday, October 22nd, 2004

    Why?
So we’ve decided to build an airplane. This decision comes from over ten years of off and on flying rental aircraft. I never have been very happy with the quality of aircraft available to fly, the cost of renting, or the aggravation involved in having to deal with the flight schedule of many other people that want to fly the same rental plane. (more…)

    Preview plans arrive

    Thursday, October 21st, 2004

So, the long awaited preview plan set / construction manual arrived today. This gives the best view of what exactly it is that we are preparing to build. Tanya did some more organization today in prep for having to store airplane parts.
I’m still working out the details of the build log.

    Engine plans

    Tuesday, October 19th, 2004

Currently, we’re planning on using an Eggenfellner Subaru firewall forward engine package. I think Jan explains why very well on his website.
